About

History always fascinated me and instead of only reading about the subect in books, I want to experience it. Besides old documents and images abandoned buildings are the only remaining piece of information that history left us. It’s always fascinating to walk into an old factory that still has most of the equipement left in place and see how it looked back then, or walk into an abandonned house and find belongings from the previous owners.

Of course in a city like Montreal, abandonments are rarely intact: broken windows, graffiti and thrash is a common sight. I have also seen intact places, as if the workers left for a break and never came back, but usually the place is thrashed, covered with graffiti and decayed. Structures like this usually have a post-apocalyptical feel to them. Both types of places are higly photogenic, and one who brings a camera can easily fill an entire memory card.

The feeling I get during explorations are amazing, walking in a small group in a silent empty hospital corridor or sitting at the bottom of an empty concrete silo listening to your heartbeat might be creepy for some but it is usually very peaceful and relaxing. Sometimes the thrill of being the first ones to discover a location can beat any other high. It sometimes feel like being an archeologist that discovered an ancient temple, only this time, it’s in the middle of the urban core.
