Since I purchased my new lens and camera, I decided to revisit an old location I already had featured on my blog. Here are the pictures.
We entered this location around 6pm, just before it got dark so I decided to experiment with long exposures. I also used my external flash (yeah i’m too cheap to buy a flash that works on my cam,so what ?) for the second time since that old movie theater. You will see some Experimental shots with this wonderful device. It was pouring like crazy and my gear got wet (hurray for holes in the roof!) and all the pics came out saturated, I like…

If you ever go, watch out for the holes on the second floor. No, i wont tell you how to get in.

After a failed attempt at a bigger target, Felix and I stumbled upon these two buildings located in Old-Montreal. According to the blueprints we found on the ground floor, they will soon be transformed into some sort of hotel.

The main floor

Top floor of the tallest of the two buildings.

The tallest building once housed an elevator that was located in the back of the building, all the machinery is now removed and the only traces that are left are all the holes on each floor covered by plywood sheets, and this sign.

Another paper sign is still visible on a rafter on that same floor.

Most of the work was done in the basement, where it seemed that they dug a little deeper and poured a new concrete floor, which clashed with the original stone foundations. The stone built firewall dividing both buildings was also cut at each level to allow people to cross between both buildings.

This building, right under the Ville Marie expressway has been, for many years a canvas for graffiti artists. Since late 2006 the main floor has been lowered by 6′, The original train tracks coming into the building have been removed and toxic soil greets you as you enter. Since it borders Westmount, one might expect condos just like all the other Imperial Tobbacco buildings.

Guess who purchased a new camera? Yeah. A Canon Xti is now part of my arsenal. Here’s a couple shots I took with my new toy.
Visit to the Benny apartments with controleman. We found a way into a different apartment complex and found some interesting stuff. While we were there we even had the chance to scare kids away who were trying to break in.

Some old Benny farm buildings still stand after 4 years of being slated for demolition.

Funny how they used the building’s doors to cover the window openings.

Tallest mark 49 1/4 another one reads august 4 1999, bottom reads 6 yrs 16 1/4
This find gave me the creeps, It made me reflect about the people living there previously and how something as simple as their grandkid/kid’s growth chart is the only trace of them living there. Everything else in the house was gutted and the walls were bare like all the other appartements.

The bottom floors were really disgusting, Floorboards were warped, black mold decorated the walls and most of the ceilings found their way onto the floor.

Last May, Tijeff, Mickael, Maze and I Had the chance of getting in contact with the Rex theater caretaker to set up a tour of the place. His father used to work there when it was still active and he told us some stories and interesting tidbits.
Back then, this one screen theatre could seat 414 patrons. The building, which opened in 1923 was originally home to a butcher’s shop. This is why the theater has its unusual design; the entrance and lobby is at a certain angle, and the Theatre slants the other way . It is the only theatre in Ste. Anne de Bellevue.
Since the Rex closed, the roof has started to leak and the floor is badly warped and beams are rotten due to a recent flood, preservation steps have to be taken before we lose this building. The seats have all gone missing as well as the original lobby and ticket counters.
In its heydays, this theater showed silent plays, Vaudeville shows and movies until the late 90’s. Due to the size of the stage and also the size of the backstage area, plays might not have been shown. In August 2007, Second Body productions actually presented an adaption of a Shakespeare play in the theater, the audience sat on the balcony space while the play was acted at the original seating area.

the original tinned ceiling the theatre was redecorated for art deco.

Inside the projection booth, One of the original seats remain.

Original fabric covering.

With big projects to turn the old glen yards into the new superhospital, many new construction has sprung up around NDG. A building on Girouard and St.Jacques has already been torn down and 3 others on Sherbrooke are slated for demolition. This afternoon me and Snurferboy decided to check one of them out. Funny fact, the pawn shop that was once below this apartment was the place where I bought my first camera in the late 90’s. The city of Montreal evaluated this building pre-slating for demolition.
